The final specs
Everything for the new PC is ordered, and except for 4 items I just ordered, it'll all be here in time for a Tuesday build.

Now I'm sure that collectively, all of my decisions will have someone disagreeing with them. Oh well. I can't follow everyone's advice, and just because advice is sound doesn't mean it suits my ultimate needs. So, anyway...

The 680-based Asus SLI motherboard (not the Striker Extreme)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
2 GB of Corsair DDR2-800 RAM
320 GB SATA Seagate 7200.10 hard drive
20x LiteOn SATA burner
EVGA overclocked 640 MB GeForce 8800GTS
X-Fi Fatal1ty Pro XtremeGamer sound card
Vista 64-bit
Office 2k7
600W power supply
1 HUGE full tower case

additionally, I've got an MS ergo keyboard coming, not the split designs that I loathe, and an Intellimouse optical, and a new Logitech PS2 Dual Shock clone game pad, and a Logitech headset that was really cheap.

Everything will be new except the monitor :)

Sounds nifty! The E6700s are <3 and the rest of it looks good too. I am still somewhat distraught/unconvinced over Vista though. I don't know how much of what has been said about it s true, but it's got me thinking about Debian or Gentoo linux. There are too many programs I need that are on Windows though...

My next PC will probably be a dual-boot system with Vista-64 and MacOS though. I'll turn the old box into a Linux server or something.

Ubuntu. Burn a live CD and boot into it sometime. Have fun with it.

There's about 3 real choices for 64-bit Intel systems: XP 64, which has 2 years of support life left; linux, which has a userbase of fanatics, geeks, nerds, and the occasional but rare normal person; or Vista 64, which is, essentially, the odds-on favorite for near-future large market share 64-bit OS. Which would YOU develop on/for?

Yar, there's really not much you can do when you want to make money save go with the flow. Unfortunately Vista is that flow. In that light there is really no better choice.

Linux is pretty geeky, i'll give you that, but it works. It works a hell of alot faster than XP ever thought about on my desktop box and it does everything I want it to. I have been playing with Debian just for fun for a bit.

I still think when I go new I will turn that into a linux server box. I can get a URL or 3 and host some web pages on it.

What the hell are you talking about? You haven't bought any games since like 1998. Whereas I, on the other hand, bought 7 or 8 in the last 5 days... x_X
