Ok, so that MP3 player idea? I can't seem to commit to doing it.

On the other hand, less immediately, I *can* commit to getting a Core 2 Duo this summer. Serious and viable suggestions are welcome, but don't nag my choice in processor. (Right now, it's looking like an E6600, when I have money, it might be a faster model)

The basic expectations are that I'll probably wind up with:

an E6600 Core 2 Duo
4 GB of RAM
a cheap nVidia PCI Express video card, since I don't 3D game much.
possibly a one of those 7.1 Creative Labs audio boards
a Sony DVD burner
300 GB SATA hard drive
680W power supply
new mid-tower case

Somehow, it's cheaper to get the CPU and motherboard together...

Thats insane. If you are gonna go that balls out on everything else why not get the good video card too? Seems odd to me.

Everything else looks shiny.

because the video card is trivial to replace, and only affects 3D performance, which I'll use for like... Return to Krondor.

really, the rest of those parts are... cheap, too.
Well, except the RAM.

We're talking a $60 video card with one GPU or a $200 with two, for what amounts to a game I could render in software at 60 fps no sweat.

That's why. I doubt there will be a killer non-MMO RPG that needs that kind of power until long after it needs 4 or 8 cores to run anyway.

Supposedly Intel is coming out with a true quad-core sometime soon. My friend Andrew was talking about all that stuff.

He's just as insane as Dan ever was. He has a server motherboard that can, in theory, take 24 gb of ram and has 8 SATA ports and 2 IDEs. He has over 1TB of hd space in that thing. I think I have found myself a new PC minion.

well, I need my tax returns back before I swing this, so there is some time before it goes down.

I could well wind up with over 1 TB of space in the end... I just ain't paying for it when I need to buy a lot of software before I can fill it up.

(For what it's worth, I expect that my writing projects will move to Office 2007 and my coding to VC 2005)
